Thanks both fantasai and Boris (Boris answered me privately). At first I wondered why the C-like syntax addition, but now I understand. I am a bit concerned that those who learn by looking at source - many of those who joined the Web did so - will see this :first-letter ::first-child syntax as a typo rather than an intentional distinction in element type.
