I've just learnt this was a bug which has since been fixed in version 6.01,
I had a lot of trouble trying to find any report of this on the internet.

Hello,

Has anyone experienced and difficulties with background image in Opera 6.0
prior version on Opera seem to support it however Opera 6.0 just ignores it
and displays the background color.
