People! Erik's comments were *jokes*, I hope. Sarcasm, anyone? To say that WINS or ActiveX are Internet standards is just silly. To say that Microsoft wants to enter into what was essentially a free exchange of ideas is ludicrous. They are running a business. The Internet paradigm and the "Microsoft software on every desktop" paradigm are incompatible. The IETF, W3C and related bodies are formed not out of a sensed business opportunity but rather out of a desire to avoid the incompatibilities that *result* in business opportunities. Microsoft is only following the standards track out of a recognition that they have to be compatible with the better and more popular browsers. The easiest way to do this is to join in the standards process and get the scoop and a PR advantage. Microsoft representatives, please spare us your insipid pleading.
