To save you checking justsmil.com every other day,
I decided to send out the news page every time it's
updated.
It's not a job I want to keep for long, though, so
if there's a volunteer that wants to take over - Tim ?

JustSMIL: SMIL Status Light
The SMIL Status Light
Green Light Rationale:
Cool tools available.
More press coverage.
Neat demos.
Hey, go make them SMIL!
[INLINE] Web Techniques Covers SMIL
Updated August 6, 1998
More positive press for SMIL! The September issue of [1]Web Techniques
carries an excellent SMIL introduction for the Web authoring masses.
Larry Bouthillier's accompanying [2]SMIL site features the source
files from his article.
[3]Veon Inc has posted a public beta version of their V-Active for
RealSystem G2 authoring tool. It allows developers to visually define
SMIL layouts and build the presentations (including generating RealPix
and RealText). The authoring tool also encodes RealVideo files from
popular video formats and allows you to define hotspots in the video
using their auto-tracking feature. Check the [4]V-Active Web site for
more details.
Veon has also announced their much awaited Veon Activation Server is
in non-public beta. The Veon Activation Server dynamically generates
SMIL from a relational database. That's cool! If you are interested in
taking part in this limited non-public beta, contact [5]Josh Kahn,
Veon Product Manager .
Catch the [6]XML Developer's Conference that is being held on August
20-21 in Montreal, Canada. Lloyd Rutledge of CWI will be giving a
[7]presentation on SMIL. The conference immediately follows the
[8]Metastructures 98 conference where Lloyd is also giving a SMIL
tutorial. Can't make it to Montreal? The CWI [9]step-by-step SMIL
tutorial is now listed in the [10]Guides section.
According to RealNetworks, [11]3.5 million RealPlayers were downloaded
in July. While that count includes all of their players, it is still a
good sign for those authoring SMIL for G2.
And if you speak Portuguese, a new SMIL discussion list has just
started. To subscribe send a message to
[12]majordomo@flash-brasil.com.br. Use "subscribe smil-br" for the
content of your message. If you don't speak Portuguese (or even if you
do), please stop in and say hello in the [13]SMILZone. We're running
SMILZone Lite right now but you can get an early start for when the
full bulletin board system opens up.
Hey, go make 'em SMIL!
