Reply to: RE>>updated IETF draft for SMIL mediatype The other user of .smi is Microsoft's Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange (SAMI) a SMIL-like format with some interesting capabilities and uses. Check it out at: http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/multimedia.htm - Larry Larry Goldberg, Director Media Access WGBH Educational Foundation 125 Western Ave. Boston, MA 02134 617-492-9258 (voice/TTY) fax 617-782-2155 Internet: Larry_Goldberg@WGBH.org -------------------------------------- Date: 8/4/98 12:15 PM To: Larry Goldberg From: Dan Dickinson No, thankfully, it wouldn't screw anything up. Macintosh files are opened based on type/creator codes (two 4 letter codes buried in the file - a text file is type TEXT, a Quicktime movie is MooV, etc) as opposed to any letter codes on the end. So the machine could distinguish between a SMIL file (which, in theory, would be type TEXT and have a creator of a player application, like GrINS) and an SMI application (which would be an APPL file). I am intrigued by someone else having .smi registered already, though. Anyone know what application this would be? -dan -----Original Message----- From: Philipp Hoschka <Philipp.Hoschka@sophia.inria.fr> To: Tim Kennedy - WebPhD.com <Tim@WebPhD.com> Cc: www-smil@w3.org <www-smil@w3.org> Date: Tuesday, August 04, 1998 11:47 AM Subject: Re: updated IETF draft for SMIL mediatype > >On 03/08/1998, "Tim Kennedy - WebPhD.com" <Tim@WebPhD.com> wrote: > >>I might make mention that Apple also uses the .smi extension for disk >>images on the Macintosh. > >interesting - does this create any problems in practice, like that >the wrong application is started ? > ------------------ RFC822 Header Follows ------------------ Received: by wgbh.org with ADMIN;4 Aug 1998 12:06:13 +0000 Received: (from daemon@localhost) by www19.w3.org (8.9.0/8.9.0) id LAA23140; Tue, 4 Aug 1998 11:55:32 -0400 (EDT) Resent-Date: Tue, 4 Aug 1998 11:55:32 -0400 (EDT) Resent-Message-Id: <199808041555.LAA23140@www19.w3.org> Message-ID: <000401bdbfc0$518775e0$7587fd80@p590tm13.ASCAIP> From: "Dan Dickinson" <dwd11@cornell.edu> To: "Philipp Hoschka" <Philipp.Hoschka@sophia.inria.fr> Cc: <www-smil@w3.org> Date: Tue, 4 Aug 1998 11:55:35 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.2106.4 Subject: Re: updated IETF draft for SMIL mediatype Resent-From: www-smil@w3.org X-Mailing-List: <www-smil@w3.org> archive/latest/84 X-Loop: www-smil@w3.org Sender: www-smil-request@w3.org Resent-Sender: www-smil-request@w3.org Precedence: list
