DAML-ONT Editor TODO list

Following the 10 Oct 2000 release of the following DAML materials:

• Annotated DAML Ontology Markup (changelog)
• daml-ont.daml (changelog)
• daml-ex.daml (changelog)

feedback is directed to the www-rdf-logic forum. This is an edited history of the feedback received and (eventually) its disposition. I intend to update this at least every other week. If this document is more than two weeks old, please disregard it and look for newer information.

If your feedback suggests changes to these DAML materials and is not acknowledged here after approximately one week, please send it again; sorry.

Bug Fixes

I regard the following as bugs with straightforward fixes that I intend to apply:

• various: URI reference consistency, typos in disjointUnionOf, intersectionOf

  fixed 11 Oct

• fix specification of daml:equivalentTo w.r.t. subPropertyOf and subClassOf

• add TallThing to the annotated walkthru

  ack 1 Nov

• setOf/oneOf buggy? (not sure where this was raised/ack'd)

Requests for enhancement

The following are requests for enhancement for which I have seen sufficient motivation and implementation experience and little or no objection:

• domain-dependent-cardinality

If you are considering an enhancement request, please do motivate it with practical experience, or I will most likely respond ala:

Would anybody else care to second this request for enhancement? Any particular practical motivation? Anybody have tools that could exploit them, or tools that suffer for the lack of them, or ontologies that you're building that are particularly awkward without them?

Better yet: how about writing a schema/ontology for these and putting it in the Web, showing how it works, and seeing if anybody else finds it useful?

Issues to study

These result from comments or questions that I did not feel I could give a satisfactory answer to:

• see if OIL denotational semantics agree with my understanding of DAML.

  Some progress: I don't see how these aspects of OIL semantcs can apply to DAML:

  • "In OIL, it was explicitly decided that, in the base language, the denotation of classes and relations should be sets of objects and binary relations between objects, and that meta-extensions, if required, would be provided in additional language layers (yet to be defined)." -- Ian, 16 Oct
  • "The domain of concrete values is disjoint from the domain of individuals." -- Ian, Mon, 2 Oct 2000 14:04:13 +0100 (BST)
• careful review of the "universe of discourse" in DAML.

• review capabilities of OIL defined classes; if DAML-ONT doesn't cover them, consider ways to make up the difference;

• study interaction of XML Schema datatypes (int, date, boolean, ...) with RDF and hence with DAML. see also: universe-of-discourse above.
