To clarify: it was my impression that one of the reasons for the DTD complexity (heavy use of parameter entities) was the necessity of dealing with namespaces and prefixes which DTDs weren't designed to deal with. The XML type schemata were designed in a namespace aware fashion and hence should be simpler with respect to this issue. An RDF DTD being very dependent on namespaces inherits all of the problems of DTDs dealing with namespaces yet the XML schemata need not necessarily have this issue.
