Yes, there's been a vast amount of traffic on this, and the
terminological confusion makes it hard to tell when we're approaching
agreement versus talking past one another.

How about we try to get everyone with a strong opinion on this to write
up a brief position paper, including their own understanding of
terminology where appropriate, and post URLs to the list so we've a
common (and relatively small) reading list?
