Hello, Twenty-four people attended the 24 February 2003 Patent Policy Working Group (PPWG) teleconference. First, the group had received a request to file an amicus brief in the Rambus case. No one was particularly in favor of doing so at this point. If another standards organizations made a similar request in the future, the PPWG might consider revisiting the issue. Second, the group discussed whether or not to request an antitrust clearance for their proposed policy from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) or the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The group believes that such a clearance is made on the basis of the facts presented, that it would count somewhat internationally not solely in the US, and that it might take about 90 days for one round. That process could be concurrent with the W3C Advisory Committee review and Director's decision on the PPWG's proposed policy. In closing, the group discussed their publication schedule. The group meets next on 3 March. Best wishes, -- Susan Lesch http://www.w3.org/People/Lesch/ mailto:lesch@w3.org tel:+1.858.483.4819 World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) http://www.w3.org/
