The W3C Multimodal Interaction Working Group held a face to face meeting in Saarbrücken, Germany, at DFKI [1] June 11-13, which included a joint meeting with the Voice Browser WG [2] on June 11. We thank DFKI for their hospitality in hosting this face-to-face meeting, including a very interesting overview presentation about DFKI and demos of their work. During the joint meeting with the Voice Browser WG we discussed how voice modality components could be designed and incorporated into multimodal applications by using properties from VoiceXML. We also saw demos from Torbjörn Lager of Göteborg University on his applications of SCXML [3]. Our main discussion points in the MMI meeting were the MMI architecture and MMI authoring. We approved publication of a new Note describing an example of authoring of an MMI application within the MMI Architecture using VoiceXML, CCXML, and XHTML. This Note was published July 2 [4]. In preparation for the next draft of the MMI Architecture and Interfaces specification [5], we also discussed error handling, media handling, and registration of modality components. We also had a very informative presentation from Masahiro Araki of the Kyoto Institute of Technology on his work on multimodal architectures. We had a presentation from the Emotion Incubator Group [6] on their work and discussed whether it would make sense for that work to continue on Recommendation Track documents as part of the MMIWG. The WG is continuing discussions on this topic. The editor's draft of the InkML [7] CR spec is close to completion. When this is published we will be requesting implementers of InkML to submit implementation reports. Our next face-to-face meeting is scheduled for October 20-21 at the Pullman Cannes Mandelieu Royal Hotel in France as part of the W3C Technical Plenary meeting [8].
