The W3C Multimodal Interaction Working Group met in Cambridge, MA Nov. 8-9, and also on November 6 jointly with the Voice Browser Working Group. These meetings were part of the W3C Technical Plenary meeting. During the joint meeting with the VBWG we discussed the State Chart Markup Language (SCXML) [1], reviewing the new structure of the specification document as well as the eventing structure. We also held joint meetings with the SYMM WG to discuss our comments on SMIL 3.0 and with the UWA WG to discuss our comments on DCCI. The primary topics of discussion were the MMI Architecture and multimodal authoring. During the architecture discussion we decided that the next Working Draft of the MMI Architecture and Interfaces document would include - Schema/syntax for the life cycle events - sequence diagrams illustrating event traffic among the Interaction Manager and the Modality Components - session initiation - media specification - glossary of terminology - a discussion of transport. We discussed BEEP (RFC-3080) and HTTP as candidates It is possible that other topics will be added as a result of our review of the feedback from the recent Workshop on Multimodal Architecture and Interfaces [2]. During the authoring discussion we reviewed a simple two-field form-filling application and discussed markup in SCXML, XHTML, and VoiceXML 2.1 and how the MMI life cycle events would be used to develop this application. A short presentation on the Multimodal Architecture was given as a Lightening Talk [3] during the Technical Plenary Day (November 7) [4] Our next Face to Face meeting will be in Orlando on March 3-5, 2008, hosted by Voxeo. Target Publication Schedule: EMMA [5]: Candidate Recommendation will be published in early December. This will include a Call for Implementations, along with information about submitting an Implementation Report for implementations of EMMA. InkML [6]: The Candidate Recommendation for InkML is expected to be published in 1Q 2008. This will include a Call for Implementations, along with information about submitting an Implementation Report for implementations of InkML. Multimodal Architecture and Interfaces [7]: The schedule for the next publication will be determined after we've finished reviewing the workshop feedback. Multimodal Authoring: this will follow soon after the MMI Architecture publication. best regards, Deborah Dahl Chair, MMI Working Group [1] SCXML http://www.w3.org/TR/2007/WD-scxml-20070221/ [2] Issues from the Multimodal Workshop http://www.w3.org/2007/08/mmi-arch/topics.html [3] MMI Lightening Talk: http://www.w3.org/2007/11/TP-LT/ [4] Technical Plenary Agenda: http://www.w3.org/2007/11/07-TechPlenAgenda.html [5] EMMA: http://www.w3.org/TR/emma/ [6] InkML: http://www.w3.org/TR/InkML/ [7] Architecture: http://www.w3.org/TR/mmi-arch/
