For full MathML, I would say we need something to give this functionality. Not all necessary characters are available in Unicode yet. For example, in the logic course I am teaching this fall, the textbook by Lu Zhongwan uses both ⧦ (U+2036) and the symbol with only a single horizontal bar (for which there is no unicode character).
