Just a quick test on the MathML2 testsuite (I could not find a zip archive for the MathML3 version). Probably a better search could be done, but find -name *.mml | xargs grep "<mstyle" | egrep -v "background|color|scriptlevel|displaystyle|fontsize|fontstyle|fontweight|mathsize|fontfamily|scriptminsize" returns ./Presentation/GeneralLayout/mstyle/mstyle1.mml: <mstyle maxsize="1"> ./Presentation/GeneralLayout/mstyle/mstyleAlinethick1.mml: <mstyle> ./Presentation/GeneralLayout/mstyle/mstyleAlinethick1.mml: <mstyle> ./Presentation/GeneralLayout/mstyle/mstyleAlinethick1.mml: <mstyle linethickness="2"> ./Presentation/TokenElements/mo/moSminmax20.mml: <mstyle minsize='1cm' maxsize='3cm'> ./ErrorHandling/NumChildren/noChildPresentation.mml: <mstyle></mstyle> This shows that the only use of <mstyle> outside the first category seems to be linethickness, maxsize, minsize. I filtered attributes from the first category and there are not a lot either as you can see above.
