In many contexts it makes sense to mark such constructs up as selector http://www.w3.org/TR/MathML2/chapter4.html#contm.selector That is you consider a as a vector and a_i as the ith element, rather than thinking of a_1 a_2,... as separate variable names that just happen to have a similar presentation form.
