This sounds like a problem when libwww makes the first system call to resolve the name of the server. The gethostbyname call is blocking and you only get back the hand when it's finished. After the first time, libwww caches the result and this speeds up things. There'a gnu project to make a non-blocking dns library. The project is still young, but it'd be interesting to interface it with libwww later on. I'll add it to the wish list. -Jose
