So what we have here is a case where dialogue invented by the author (of a non-fiction book) gets quotation marks, and actual quotations from the sources that are not merely quoted but are reasserted by the author (that is, if they are false, he is making a false claim) are put in a different font (not merely bold italic, as shown here; see the Google Books view).
