Can someone tell me how many websites/documents are using markup in their title and cannot be fixed to use < instead? Most websites are actively maintained, most documents get superseded with new revisions to correct errors and omissions. I see no problem in requiring pages that currently use <title>The <abbr> element</title> to change to <title>The <abbr> element</title> I also believe there are so few cases that cannot be changed by their webmasters as to be insignificant for consideration here. If the answer to my above request is less than 10⁻⁵% of extant pages then I think it is not worth worrying about backwards compatibility at all. Once all pages are using entities instead of less-than characters directly, and browsers can be revved to respect or ignore markup as per their display abilities, we will be in a position to use markup. - Nicholas.
