Although, personally, I think this helped to delay the availability of static vector graphics on web pages, the point is that sometimes it is better to simply admit that people want to do things that are not in the spirit of HTML, and it will be much cleaner to use a tool designed for what they want to do. In that case, you can even add back things like structure, as is done with tagged PDF, in that other technology.
