I think many of the creators of the web would like to believe that URLs are no more copyright than International Standard Book Numbers. On the other hand advertising funded news based web sites tend to not like links to anything other than their home page, and companies wouldn't like links from hostile web sites (IANAL but I suspect that might be more a trademark than a copyright issue).
