In terms of browser support, tables and client-side image maps
came out about the same time. As I recall, the tables RFC was
published a bit sooner than client-side imagemaps made it
into a standards-track spec, but both have been around for a
while. Roughly, they fall between the HTML 2.0 spec and
the HTML 3.2 spec (which includes both).
