There have been many thoughtful comments offered on footnotes, some suggesting a variety of workarounds. Thanks for these. There seems to be agreement that footnotes have semantic value. This suggests that html shd offer specific footnote handling. I also want to re-emphasize the additional issue, which is that since other formats accommodate this semantic value, the failure of html to do so hinders algorithmic translation between formats. Specifically, it means that html is a useless format for the development and maintenance of documentation, which is a shame. --Alan G. Isaac
