I disagree.  The document author has access to the width of the image in
pixels, so s/he can do the math to figure out what half of that is.  The
author does not have access to the browser width, so using % to refer to
the browser width is much more useful.  Since % is used for this purpose
in other contexts, it's even arguably consistent.
