I also like the thrust of Sylvain's proposal.

However I don't understand how the "group" attribute will help with data such as role credits.

How about copying CSS syntax to add arbitrary "how to interpret this value" metametadata? UAs savvy of the "styling" metametadata for the "credit" attribute would work optimally; others would still display useful info.
