One could also use an XML validator, of course.  A piece of software like
HTML-Kit (which has HTML-Tidy) with a validator plug-in would provide useful
feedback on WHY the page isn't conformant, too (as well as e.g. teaching WAI
guidelines for tables and images, etc.).
