finding actual file names

How does one find out the actual document name when
one arrives at a document through redirection or site aliasing

I tried file -- document information

and source view but no luck

and another situation arises if the title is longer than the dialog box
anticipates -- it is clipped and the most useful part is lost ....
if clipping is required , it is the end of the string that should be retained
and clipping traditionally includes ellipse  ...
