While I thank you for that info (I was unaware of this), I also note that a) the contextmenu attribute (not element) is currently not part of the W3C HTML5 specification, and b) according to caniuse.com, support for contextmenu is practically non-existent today.(http://caniuse.com/#search=contextmenu) 

 

Data-points straying from the larger discussion. :-)

Q:  do you believe that the context menu is the authors UI, or the end-users UI? In other words, is there anything in the contextual menu that individual authors can change?

 

The html5 contextmenu element allows it to be customized by the web author.
