Preference For Global Access Research Deliverable 1 (DOE/NIDDR funded project) - Resending to include ISKME

The following is a version of the research paper on this project designed
for public dissemination. ISKME, Raising the Floor, IBM, OCAD, WGBH, and
Inclusive Technologies participated in this research. The purpose for this
work is to perform research on what preferences must be acquired in an
accessibility needs discover tool as well as how best to capture those
requirements.

This is excellent research and it will be used as the basis for a new
Discovery Tool prototype that will be used in the Global Public Inclusive
Infrastructure, a global on ramp to IT. Of particular importance is this is
the first time cognitive accessibility requirements have been gathered all
in one spot. If were aware of these needs in the past I think we would have
done better in addressing cognitive impairment issues in the work we do. An
interesting statistic from the research was that when digital Math was
employed (MathM,), with user directed navigation that is then highlighted
and spoken, that math cognition went up across the board by all students by
10-15%. That is huge. There is also a big push in education to make use of
digital math in learning material. This is also one of the reasons why
ePub3, which includes MathML support, is so important for accessibility.

Michael Cooper has been kind enough to post these documents on the W3C
sites so that they don't fill your mailbox. The files are a bit large.
