Thank you for bearing with us on this point.  Later this fall I will  
be asking
PFWG to take a fresh look at to see if we can do a bit better yet.

Agreed.  We have created an issue on this (Member link, admittedly)
http://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/Group/track/issues/67

.. and we will be continuing to talk with you because [I, at least,  
think] there are
things for ARIA to say about this and things for HTML to say.
