aloha, all! durinng today's PF telecon, i refered to quote throwing some ideas against the wall since i joined the HTML WG to see if they stick unquote - here is a short list of the beginning of the threads i started on public-html@w3.org, with issues which i had previously brought up on the w3c-wai-pf mailing list, save for my proposal to deprecate BLOCKQUOTE in favor of a single QUOTE element, which could be used inline and as a block element, in line with the HTML4x recommendation's definitions of the INS and DEL elements: <http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/struct/text.html#h- 9.4> i also added to the quote and abbreviations posts, suggestions for strenghthening the for/id binding to provide a reuse mechanism, and even suggested that one might create an RDF file, containing abbreviations and expansions which could be applied site-wide and relieve the author of the burden of expanding every abbreviation instance, and make it possible for authoring tools to prompt the author, when he or she uses abbreviation markup, to add an expansion on the fly (which would be automagically added to the site-wide definition list) or to associate it with a pre-existing expansion. (yes, i know that ABBR and ACRONYM are supposed to be quote reuseable unquote, but that skirts the question of what does one do when one has identical abbreviations that mean different things, such as Dr. - in english, it can be expanded to Doctor or Drive, just as St. can be expanded to both Street and Saint - and ADA - if one is writing about the American Dental Associations' guidelines on treating persons with AIDS in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, there will be 2 discrete instances of the ACRONYM quote ADA unquote, and this is the type of situation which is not adequately expressed in the HTML4x technical recommendation) since the HTML WG works in public, rather than member space, i'm posting this to XTECH, as the issues involved affect all of WAI's activities... comments, corrections, criticism and additions welcome, gregory. ---- Begin List of Threads on public-html ---- 1. abbreviations in canonical HTML/XHTML <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2007Apr/0065.html> 2. strenghtening and ensuring the existence of Q <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2007Apr/0066.html> 3. an arguement for deprecating BLOCKQUOTE <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2007Apr/0102.html> 4. depracate HR and replace with LS (logical seperator) <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2007Apr/0099.html> ---- End List of Threads on public-html ---- gregory. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Advice: The smallest current coin. -- Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary ------------------------------------------------------------------ Gregory J.
