1.1.1 Render Alternative Content: For any content element, the user can choose to render any types of recognized alternative content that are present. (Level A) 001 Test Assertion: A mechanism exists to allow the user to render alternative content 1. Using the documentation or discovery, identify if the user can choose to render alternative content. The mechanism(s) can be a global preference, a context selection or other mechanism that can be accessed by the user through a menu or documentation (e.g. instructions to modify a configuration file). 2. If no mechanism exists, select FAIL. If a mechanism exists, go to test 002 002 Test Assertion: Once chosen by the user, the user agent will render alternative text for *sample alternative content* [1]. 1. Using the *sample alternative content* example, or an example page with known alternative content, render the page 2. Activate the mechanism to display alternative content. 3. For each piece of sample alternative content: 3.1 If the alternative content is visible, select PASS. 3.2 If the alternative content is not visible, note that type of alternative content in the notes (e.g. “captions not visible”) 3.3 Examine the next piece of same alternative content 4. If all the sample alternative content was rendered, select PASS, if any type of alternative content did not pass, then select FAIL. [1] the phrase "sample alternative content" will be a link to a public HTML page with valid alternative content for all the alternative content types that we agree should be tested in order to pass this success criterion.
