I was not aware of these aria roles until now. But it’s also worth noting that pub-aria 1.1 (still in draft) deprecates the the doc-endnotes role. Footnotes and Endnotes come from print media; I’m not sure how suitable or usable they are in the web context. In any case, it’s probably best to stick with native html elements (ol, li, etc.), and to include links going to and from the footnote or endnote reference. A suitable heading for the notes section also seems like a good idea. Regarding aria-describedby, I suggest reviewing the caveats listed in https://www.tpgi.com/describing-aria-describedby/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.com%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tpgi.com%2Fdescribing-aria-describedby%2F__%3B!!DZ3fjg!rxQ1Sy1eVl5lFw-vJsa32wsgci6n9Nv1LBdxmSFJOFuI6yht9ohkmPhWi_o_5_k%24&data=04%7C01%7Cjku%40uic.edu%7C02f5070a5ae24b81082c08d953524525%7Ce202cd477a564baa99e3e3b71a7c77dd%7C0%7C0%7C637632436124402586%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=DNSL8awAJ4Z5B1DNuXiquksbCHLR%2Bmy0q0X57y8TPGE%3D&reserved=0> And test with different screen readers. We have some articles on our website that carry footnotes (currently numbered) that point to links further down the page. Currently, a typical fragment looks a bit like this:
Content in here[2].
Then the footnote further down the page:

[2] the content source web link
Would using the *aria-describedby* attribute as detailed by this writer be the best way forward?
