qq on mailto links

Hello,

I hope you are all having a good day.

We are currently in the process of improving our hyperlinks across the website and wondered what the deal was with mailto: links. For links that open in a new window, we will signpost that the link 'opens in a new window', but what happens with email because if they use Outlook, it will open in their default email client, and if they use a browser-based email client set up then it will open in a new window ( but it's not one size fits all).

Is it best in this case to have some hidden text that says, "send email", or, "opens in new browser or application"? Does anyone have examples of how they have handled it? These links don't merit being replaced by forms, so I am left with mailto abc@123.com<mailto:abc@123.com> style links instead.

Or is it obvious that as email it will do what it does and doesn't need signposting?

I tried looking on WebAIM but had no joy.

Thank you!
Louise
