RE: captions accessibility with screen readers.

Logically thinking, it's not necessary for the captions to be accessible by screen reader. As the 'Caption' purpose is to show the running text of video content that's useful for people with hearing impairments.

For screen reader purpose, the captions may be helpful if there's no 'Audio Description' (AD) version [or] 'Transcripts' available for the same video. Couple of examples -

* When there's silent text shown in the video e.g. 'address', 'email', 'thank you message', will the screen reader interpret when there's no audio?

* The graphic images in the video will mostly miss to have alternative text or voice description of it

However, as per WCAG 1.2.5<https://www.w3.org/TR/UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20/media-equiv-audio-desc-only.html> the Audio Description is mandated for all the pre-recorded video content.

It's good to know about other's opinions too on this, primarily from the users using screen readers.

Thank you!

Best,
Poornima.

Subject: captions accessibility with screen readers.

Thoughts from the wider community.

I am wanting to bounce something off the community in relation to accessible media controls. Should the captions be accessible to a screen reader? When the caption is, the useability of the web page and general usage suffers due to much information.

So should the captions be accessible by a screen reader? If so, what ARIA property should be used? As ARIA-live="polite" is to verbose.
