> and XHTML has just added a new feature to it. The only thing new about this with XHTML is that a semicolon is required even if the entity reference is followed by whitespace. "& blah" was allowed in HTML4.0 and earlier but "&blah" was not. However it has long (always?) been recommended to use the semicolon in any case since it was never wrong to do so, and hence a good habit to get into.
