I think those are good candidates, John, but to me Enhanced is less than Extended, so I'd suggest flipping them. BTW, although I agree I think it's better not to rename the existing SC, I don't think the minimum argument is consistent with the fact we have a minimum as a Level AA for contrast at the moment. So I'd suggest Level A: Focus visible Level AA: Focus visible (Enhanced) Level AAA: Focus visible (Extended) Michael Gower Senior Consultant in Accessibility IBM Design 1803 Douglas Street, Victoria, BC V8T 5C3 gowerm@ca.ibm.com cellular: (250) 661-0098 * fax: (250) 220-8034 From: John Foliot <john.foliot@deque.com> To: Alastair Campbell <acampbell@nomensa.com> Cc: "WCAG list (w3c-wai-gl@w3.org)" <w3c-wai-gl@w3.org> Date: 2020/07/02 07:46 AM Subject: [EXTERNAL] Re: Focus visible, plus? Hi Alastair, all, I'm personally struggling with "Minimum" at AA, since the *real* minimum is actually Level A - so the use of minimum in your example actually may add confusion, not reduce it. What about: Level A: Focus visible Level AA: Focus visible (Extended) Level AAA: Focus visible (Enhanced) Not wed to that either, but just adding another possible choice to the list. (And also that we can do it within the timescale, i.e. in the next couple of weeks.) Sukriti jumped in (thank you!) and created this draft: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17nRYCTMT6GzKoa8G8-WUTh8NXhzx-FOED_2mNeRmmU8/edit?usp=sharing Please do have a look and comment if you spot anything to improve, we’ll discuss the reviews on the 14th July. It does bring up an issue of naming though, as it stands in WCAG 2.2 we have: Level A: Focus visible Level AA: Focus visible (enhanced) Level AAA: Focus visible (??) All sorts of strange words went through my head as to what the AAA version could be, but perhaps it would be best to consider both the AA and AAA versions for this purpose? I.e. the name for the new AA version is not finalised yet, so that is adjustable. In WCAG 2.1 we have various meta-adjectives(?) for SCs such as: Minimum / Enhanced (blank) / No exception Pre-recorded / Live In context/Link only Legal, Financial, Data/All My initial suggestion is: Level A: Focus visible Level AA: Focus visible (Minimum) Level AAA: Focus visible (Enhanced) My thinking is that the new AA version defines the minimum size & contrast. Does that seem reasonable? Kind regards, -Alastair -- www.nomensa.com tel: +44 (0)117 929 7333 / 07970 879 653 follow us: @we_are_nomensa or me: @alastc Nomensa Ltd.
