RE: DRM protest timed with TPAC 2016

Ø and previously by the HTML5 Accessibility Task Force, and between strong MUST language around what part of the video stream can and can't be encrypted (currently only the H.264 encoded video*) and not the additional accessibility materials (caption, video description, transcripts), along with the fact that EME has no impact on the player or the controls (just the encrypted stream),

John, thank you for the update – I wasn’t aware of what discussions had gone on so this is helpful to know. I wanted to confirm a few more details. Specifically I want to be sure if a user is using screen magnification, color filters, etc. that the stream would not be interrupted, blacked out, garbled, or prevent the magnification or colors filters from working. I know some DRM content can block screen recording software so I wanted to make sure the techniques they use for that don’t block users with low vision and color perception limitations from making the adjustments they need with their assistive technology. Low vision aspects of accessibility sometimes get forgotten among the well-known items with captions and audio descriptions.

FWIW, the EME spec was closely reviewed by the APA earlier this summer, and previously by the HTML5 Accessibility Task Force, and between strong MUST language around what part of the video stream can and can't be encrypted (currently only the H.264 encoded video*) and not the additional accessibility materials (caption, video description, transcripts), along with the fact that EME has no impact on the player or the controls (just the encrypted stream), I'm hard-pressed to see any accessibility concerns with this API.

<opinion>
That said, there are opponents to this API and Premium Content Encryption seeking to halt this work at the W3C, and who demonstrate no apparent shame in trying to leverage mainstream fear and lack of awareness about the needs of PwD, and just play the "accessibilty" card, not in support of PwD, but rather to advance thier own agenda.

Jon, what concerns can you suggest that we may have previously missed? Happy to try and answer any follow-on questions.

On a related note, it might be worth the working group discussing how DRM can impact accessibility of content by people with disabilities.
This is a topic of interest for sure. Noted.

Thanks

Josh

As an AC rep I have been approached by some organizations around this issue and potential accessibility concerns. I’d like to know more about what’s being done.
