Proposed SC: Unique Titles - or - Unique & Updated Titles

Folks,

 

I want to propose a new SC for 2.1 around Unique Titles, and maybe dynamic updating. As this is partially a mobile issue, I checked with Kathy Wahlbin to be sure the Mobile TF had not already come up with something for this. They do have a suggested Technique, but no SC, so I told her I would bring it here…..

 

The 2.4.2 SC says:


2.4.2 Page Titled:  <https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/#webpagedef> Web pages have titles that describe topic or purpose. (Level A)

 

 

The known issues with 2.4.2 are:

 

*         There is nothing about uniqueness  (though the topic or purpose are good, people have long made uniqueness a best practice)

*         There is nothing specific to identify that it is applicable to mobile screens

*         There is nothing specific about dynamically updating the title for SPAs

 

I propose a SC that would cover the instances above (what 2.4.2 doesn’t specifically cover), I do not want change 2.4.2 (as we don’t want to change existing SC), it is good as it stands.

 

 

​​​​​I would like to start the conversation with WCAG with this suggested wording:

 

Web pages and screens (views?) have titles that are unique (to the site or application) when rendered.

 

 

Somebody please suggest better wording to address the dynamic changes bit (instead of the ‘when rendered’)….or maybe the part of this suggested SC could move out to a dynamic changes SC (that I *think* is currently proposed).

 

The word *titles* could be given a specific glossary definition. Maybe also a single word could be used to replace both web page and screen, and then given a glossary definition as well.

 

Thoughts?
