Chris / Jim, One option for users who do not want a visible caption is to describe the purpose of the table in the summary. But the title attribute on the table also is very handy for this purpose. WinEyes reads the title in the table tag and it appears as a tooltip. When title is valid for the table as per HTML specs why should techniques advise against its use? JAWS should also expose the title and so should other TTS products.
