<EMBED> vs. <OBJECT>, Totally lost!

I have used the <EMBED> tag for a while now for my .swf and I want to follow the 
w3 standard of using <OBJECT> but these two tags seem to be like night and day 
and I can not seem to get <OBJECT> to work if anyone has any advice @ it pertains to embedding .swf please help
