Re: EOWG - November 20 Webinar on Section 508 Enterprise Lifecycle

Hi Shawn,

I took the opportunity to watch/listen to this Webinar. It is available at http://www.adaconferences.org/CIOC/Archives/ and requires the Blackboard launcher be installed. The core of the talk is about an hour long with about 30 minutes of questions and answers (which I have not listened to as yet).

Quite an interesting talk with a lot of thoughts on how large projects are managed from the perspective of a Section 508 Critical Partner within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Enterprise Performance Life Cycle. This role does not necessarily take on the task of assessing websites or applications for compliance (although there may be a broader team associated with the Partner that does this) but has a responsibility to ensure that Section 508 is considered at key project stages for example, considering how Section 508 is included in acquisitions language. This role is not really a planning role but more of an oversight one.

An interesting topic covered was how Iterative design was handled and how that deviated from the broader project management framework. The key thing here is identifying and agreeing when checkpoints should take place; whether based on fixed number of cycles or on feature completion.

One theme that was apparent throughout the talk was that this was effectively a risk management activity. This may be something that could be thought about for inclusion somehow in our planning documents as it is a common planning activity.

Thanks

Kevin

Mark D. Urban, HHS Program Team Co-Chair and CDC Section 508 Coordinator, will describe how HHS ensures accessibility from the first idea until the system is retired. He will discuss how to integrate Section 508 into the established process for development and will address challenges of the iterative development process and the tradeoffs with large customizable off-the-shelf software packages.
