On yesterday's call it was decided to recast the "do not remove unrecognized markup" checkpoint as "do not automatically remove any markup". The following is a proposed wording: B.1.3 Ensure that the author is notified before markup is automatically removed. [Priority 2] Rationale: Automatically removing markup can cause the unintentional loss of structural information. Even unrecognized markup may have accessibility value, since it may include recent technologies that have been added to enhance accessibility. Techniques: Implementation Techniques for Checkpoint B.1.3 Success Criteria: 1. The author must be notified before any markup is permanently removed by an automatic process. TECHNIQUES: SC1 Applicability: This success criteria is applicable authoring tools that are capable of automatically removing markup. Technique B.1.3-1.1[Sufficient]: When an automatic process is to be performed that cannot be completed without removing markup, including unrecognized markup, providing the author with the option of allowing the tool to remove the markup and proceed with the operation or preserving the markup by canceling the operation. Technique B.1.3-1.2 [Advisory]: Providing the author the option to confirm or override removal of markup either on a change-by-change basis or as a batch process. Cheers, Jan
