*Apologies for cross-postings* New Networks: Contemporary Art in the Arab World Friday 13 July 2007, 10.30–17.00 Over the last five years we have seen the emergence of regional collaboration between artists, curators, critics and institutions in the Middle East and North Africa. This seminar looks at the impact of these collaborations on the practice of a new generation of artists. Naturally, these collaborations are riddled with political, cultural, social, economic, ethnic or religious connections and divides of the region – but nevertheless introduce a certain mobility into rigid definitions of place and identity. The impact of the magazine Bidoun cannot be underestimated, while the Sharjah Biennial has done much to put the Middle East on the map. On top of this, other more local initiatives operate both within and without the notion of the region as a place. This seminar will explore whether the lines of communication between neighbours in the Middle East still run via London, Paris and New York; what the impact of a publication such as Bidoun and a platform such as the Sharjah Biennial on the production of young artists are, and what the role of imagination and fiction is in the constitution of these new identities. Speakers include Tirdad Zolghadr, (artist, curator and writer based in Teheran and Berlin); Monika Borgmann (an artist with Umam Productions, Beirut; Reem Fadda (curator at the International Academy of Art, Ramallah); Issa Touma (an artist and curator with the Women's Art Festival and International Photography Gathering, Aleppo; Mahita El Bacha Urieta (London-based curator) and Paul Domela (Programme Director, Liverpool Biennial). Organised by the Liverpool Biennial in collaboration with Mahita El Bacha Urieta, as part of a series of seminars about new sites of artistic production for Liverpool Biennial 2008. Part of the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival. Tate Liverpool The Auditorium Free, booking recommended Price includes refreshments For tickets, call 0151 702 7400.
