what is the mean of translation?

hi, i am an egyptian student in english department,in the faculty of arts.one of the most important courses in our studies is the translation.we had to translate passeges from english to arabic and the opposite.what is the iomportant steps that i had to do to reach fo a good translation to avoid the mistakes?also i need to reach to a real meaning to the term translation;is it just to change the word into other languages? our doctor asigned to us to look for the meaning of the term translation and to write them in not less than one paper,so i am confused and i had no thoughts about what to do so i decided to ask the net.
