Attribute value normalization incompatibility

XML spec (3.3.3) currently says:

> 3.	If the attribute is not of type CDATA, all strings of white space must
be normalized
> to single space characters.

SGML also says that leading and trailing white space is removed.  Is there
any reason to be incompatible here?
