ALPHA / DIGIT vs alphanum

I thought someone brought this up already, but an archive search didn't turn
it up. Is there a good reason the scheme and unreserved productions use ALPHA
/ DIGIT instead of alphanum? I know, there's no reason they need to, but since
it's available...
