Re: Fwd: Accessibility Improvement Assistance or Sharing an Example

Hey Shawn,

First, thanks so much for getting back to me on this! I have already used the mail archive search, and some of my team and I will join the Discussion List.

Your message prompted a useful meeting. We did some quick testing and the already playing decorative videos felt more like a motion assault to our users than a feature that added value to their experience. That said, our team decided to replace all of the decorative video banners across the All About Birds site with still images.

I love hearing that you are a birder and find our website useful! Be in touch with any suggestions. I love getting real-world user input!

Sarah

Hi, Sarah,

It is good to hear of your work to improve accessibility. (As an avid bird watcher, I use your website frequently.)

Unfortunately we do not have the resources to be able to answer your question promptly. We do host an Interest Group discussion list where issues of digital accessibility are discussed. From there you can get multiple perspectives. You can search the mailing list archives, to get a feel for the list, through: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-ig/

You can join the mailing list and post questions by following the instructions about the Discussion List under:
        https://www.w3.org/WAI/about/groups/waiig/#mailinglist

You might also find this information useful:

> Our Cornell Lab of Ornithology / All About Birds team is working hard to improve accessibility and inclusion for all of our digital properties. To do this well, we often rely on your W3 team's guidance. I'm looking for some accessibility help or a link to an example/documentation you might share.

We are in the midst of adding a play/pause toggle to all decorative hero banner videos so a user has control over whether or not to play them. Most of the decorative hero videos already have relevant captions (not to be confused with an in-video caption) that are part of the design. What we'd like to know is whether we can use an "aria-describedby" to help non-sighted users, especially since we already have the caption for visual users? I'd be happy with a link to documentation and/or an example of this recommendation for this setup.
