Well, it's not really possible for element() to identify the root node, but other than that, the plan seems to work (after reviewing a bunch of relevant spec material). http://www.w3.org/2007/xmlsec/Drafts/xmldsig-core/xmldsig-core-xpointer.html ... is a variant of the editor's draft that I *think* has the necessary changes to sections 4.3.3.2 and 4.3.3.3.
