2.1 Simplify parameters

I believe our stated plan is to use maps instead of parameters.
Exactly how the defaulting story will work is perhaps still unclear.
Nevertheless, here's a stab at removing parameter input ports:

It turned out to be not too difficult, really.

I didn't remove the parameter input ports from the step signatures
in this draft because I know that will create a bunch of merge
conflicts with
