Workshop Announcement: Mobile and Web Technologies in Social and Economic Development

Hi HTML-Speech XG,

Dan kindly agreed to my sending this slightly off-topic message to the list.

On behalf of the Web Foundation and W3C I would like to let this XG know about the Mobile and Web Technologies in Social and Economic Development, to be help in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, on June 4-5.

One of the topics of the workshop (and indeed a very important one underlying the work of the Web Foundation) is Speech applications in the developing world. We believe that given the specific conditions of the mobile market in poor countries, in terms of literacy, available handsets or network infrastructure, speech technologies are currently far more important than any other to provide Web services to the greatest number of people.

I happen to know that quite a few of the companies in this XG are aware of this, and may thus be interested in the workshop. That's why I'm taking the liberty to spam the list. Hope you won't mind too much.

The workshop page is at http://public.webfoundation.org/2011/01/MW4D_WS/

Don't hesitate to get in touch with me for more information or expressions of interest.
