Sometime there are multiple dialects of the written language of a web page, and the developer would like to support speech input in any of those dialects. For example, an English page might be viewed by speakers of American, British, Australian or other English dialects. Speech recognition won't work very well with a recognizer for the wrong dialect. I think this problem would be even more severe in Chinese, since basically the same writing system is used for different languages, not just different dialects of the same language. For a humorous example of speech recognition gone awry when an unanticipated dialect is used, check out the "Scottish voice-operated lift" YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3JcHhA7M-Y.
